LG Optimus F5 is first Optus Prepaid 4G phone

Optus has released its first prepaid 4G LTE smartphone, already available online, through ‘yes’ Optus stores, telesales and retail partners.
The Optimus F5 is available in white and black and costs $299 for outright purchase. Customers after the Optimus F5 on a plan can grab it for $0 upfront on the $35 Optus Plan over 24 months. Minimum spend: $840.

Specs and Features

Unlike the many prepaid smartphones that tend to fall in to the ‘budget’ category, this device is distinctly a mid-range device.
It boasts a 4.3 inch display with qHD (540×960) resolution, giving it a pixel density of 256 pixels per inch (ppi).
The dual-core 1.2GHz CPU is backed up by 1GB of RAM. There’s 8GB of internal storage with a MicroSD for up to 32GB of expandable storage.
The 5MP rear camera is fairly standard, although many mid-rangers are graduating to 8MP. The 1.3MP front-facing camera is definitely still a mid-range staple and the 2150mAh battery should provide ample power.
The F5 isn’t TD-LTE enabled, meaning that while it will work on the majority of the Optus 4G network, users in Canberra should be wary. We have more info about TD-LTE and FD-LTE here.
There is also a discrepancy regarding which Android version it will be running. The press release we received said that it would come running Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean, but the Optus website currently has the specs at 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. Jelly Bean is more likely, as those specs are commonly found around the web.
For $299 outright the Optimus F5 sounds like a pretty solid Android device for prepaid users. It’s also a good deal for $0 on the $35 plan. Either way any Optus user looking for a mid-range Android should definitely consider including the Optimus F5 in their mobile phone comparisons.
